Most of us are unaware that the Modern Slavery Act 2018 commenced on 1 January, 2019 , heralding a new statutory modern slavery reporting requirement for larger companies operating in Australia.  However those members and guests who attended our breakfast meeting last Tuesday, heard PP Lindy Hunt tell us about how slavery is involved in many Australian businesses or supply chains.

Lindy was unaware herself how widespread this was until she was began investigating the subject through her role as Head of Risk, Legal , Audit & Compliance at a large Superannuation company. In excess of 40 million people globally are subject to some form of modern slavery and in Australia 4,300 people are enslaved.

On Australia Day, Sunday , 26 January a number of our club members were involved in a Bunnings BBQ at Artarmon in very hot, humid conditions which made our tasks extremely difficult.   We were aware that our sales of sausages and drinks would be affected by the numerous other various BBQ’s and celebrations taking place on the day.

Sales were certainly down on recent BBQ’s but we were very pleased to have raised over $400.00 from donations to assist the drought affected residents of Molong in addition to the sales profits.

Our speaker on Tuesday, 4 February will be Geeth Geeganage who will present an update on the NBN Rollout.
